The 1949 Fords were all-new and many credit these cars for saving the Ford Motor Company following the war. These are quite modern-looking compared to a lot of their post-war competition, a much more integrated 3-box design that would set the stage for all the cars that would follow. For many enthusiasts, cars like this 1949 Ford Custom Deluxe convertible are the ones to own with their familiar ?bullet nose? front end and smooth-running flathead V8s. Dressed in traditional Fez Red, this pretty convertible coupe has a perfect ?40s look that would seem at home in a Normal Rockwell painting. Paint and bodywork were reportedly completed in the 1990s but it?s holding up great with only minor signs of use and a few touch-ups here and there. The slab-sided bodywork is commendably straight and the paint has a soft vintage shine that looks right. The doors close with a reassuringly solid sound, so you know the frame isn?t sagging, and it?s fully dressed with accessories like the hood ornament plus front and rear bumper guards. The chrome and stainless trim is in good condition, with a few original parts working with restored pieces to give it a consistent look.
The two-tone interior is handsomely trimmed in durable vinyl that looks suitable for a car from the late 1940s. The big ivory steering wheel makes this Ford feel lively around town, and rubber mats for the front seat is a Ford tradition going back to the Model T. Of note, the horn ring and steering wheel are in excellent condition, the door panels are correctly trimmed, and all the window hardware is in great condition. All the gauges are operational (although we?re not sure we trust the gas gauge) but sadly the clock and radio are offline, which isn?t unusual. The 3-speed shifter slides through the gates easily and this car is equipped with overdrive, which should make cruising a lot more relaxing. There?s also an accessory Magic Air heater under the dash, along with aftermarket seat belts for front seat occupants. Overhead, the power convertible top is in good condition, although the rear window is cracked but that?s easy enough for any glass shop to replace. There?s also a matching boot to give the car a sleek look when the top is down. And like all ?shoebox? Fords, there?s a massive trunk in back, properly outfitted with a rubber mat, full-sized spare tire that?s never been used, and a jack assembly.
The engine is the same durable, torquey, and energetic 239 cubic inch flathead V8 that powered Fords for more than two decades. In 1949, it made a nice, round 100 horsepower as well as all those great sounds that have made these a perennial favorite. We have no information on the rebuild, but it was nicely done as the engine starts easily, idles almost silently, and makes good oil pressure without any smoke out back. It?s healthy. It pulls the convertible around without ever seeming to work very hard, and a dual exhaust system featuring a pair of Smitty-style mufflers gives it a traditional flathead sound. The electrical system is still 6 volts, but don?t let that frighten you?it kicks over eagerly and works like it should. You?ll also note that the engine is neatly detailed with corporate blue engine enamel, a proper oil bath air cleaner on top, and correct hoses and clamps for the radiator. Underneath, it?s probably original and we don?t believe the body has been off the frame. However, it?s quite solid with no signs of rot or other issues, and any repair work that was done was done competently. 4.10 gears in the rear end mean it feels quick and nimble around town and ride quality is great thanks to modern tube-style shocks. Brakes are manual drums all around, but they?re plenty effective for the car?s performance and relative light weight. 15-inch steel wheels wear trim rings and factory hubcaps, as well as a set of 6.70-15 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires installed just a few years ago.
Extras include a set of period fender skirts painted to match the car.
The ?49 Fords were ground-breaking cars and remain popular with flathead fans around the world. They have great road manners, look fantastic, and feel quite modern when compared to the 1948 Fords. Buyer expressly agrees to bear the entire expense of repairing and/or correcting any defects that may presently exist or that may occur in the Vehicle. Buyer expressly agrees to waive his/her/their right to recover damages arising out of or relating to the condition of the Vehicle from Harwood.
Harwood Motors Ltd. strives to perform visual inspections on all vehicles we represent but we do not disassemble vehicles or components for inspection purposes and therefore it is always possible that there is hidden damage that is not readily apparent. We will not guarantee the fitness of any components. We do not perform internal examinations, so we cannot guarantee the condition of unseen internal components such as crankshafts, bearings, gears, and other mechanical equipment. This also applies to electronics such as radios, clocks, gauges, light fixtures, switches, or other electrical devices. Buyer should personally inspect the vehicle and satisfy him/her/themself as to its mechanical and cosmetic fitness.

VIN
Harwood Motors tries to provide clear images of each vehicle's primary VIN (vehicle identification number) and verifies that the primary VIN on the car matches the VIN on the title. Buyer agrees to hold Harwood Motors harmless for any disputes arising from hidden or secondary VINs on the vehicle. Antique vehicles may be titled by different numbers such as engine number or frame number. Buyer is solely responsible for verifying his home state's inspection and registration requirements regarding VINs prior to purchase.
VEHICLE INSPECTIONS
All Buyers are given the opportunity to inspect the vehicle, whether personally or through third party. We always welcome inspections by Buyers and/or third parties who wish to undertake such examinations at their own expense.
ODOMETER READING
Harwood makes no warranty or representation regarding mileage other than providing a reading of the current odometer. Each listing contains an image of the odometer reading at the time of vehicle’s arrival and should not be taken to mean it is actual miles unless otherwise stated. Most antique vehicles come with a title that states mileage as Non-Actual, Exempt, or Exceeds Mechanical Limits.
VEHICLE TITLE & REGISTRATION
As a dealer in Ohio, Harwood Motors is required to process title in Buyer's name. Harwood will deliver an Ohio title in Buyer's name within 45 days of Buyer’s full payment of the purchase price and fees to Harwood. This title can be transferred to Buyer's home state for registration purposes. Buyer is solely responsible for satisfying all title and registration requirements of the state in which the Vehicle will be registered. Buyer acknowledges all insurance, licenses, tags, plates, and/or registrations maintained by Harwood on the Vehicle shall be canceled on the Sale Date. Vehicle title and registration requirements vary from state to state, particularly with regard to antique, classic, special interest, and modified vehicles. It is Buyer’s sole responsibility to determine his/her state's requirements for such vehicles and to ensure the Vehicle meets all such requirements.
DELIVERY OF VEHICLE
Buyer may take possession of the Vehicle at Harwood’s premises any time after Sale Date. Buyer is solely responsible for shipping and delivering the Vehicle to his/her chosen destination. At Buyer’s request and at Buyer’s risk and cost, Harwood can arrange for third-party shipping to deliver the Vehicle to Buyer’s chosen destination. Unless alternate arrangements are made with Harwood in writing, Vehicle must be picked up within 30 days of Sale Date or storage fees of $10 per day will accrue until Vehicle is retrieved.
